My Journey to Becoming a CATCH Certified Dog Trainer

In April 2018, I proudly completed the CATCH Canine Trainers Academy Master Class, earning my title as a CATCH Certified Dog Trainer (CCDT). This journey was both enriching and transformative, deepening my understanding of dog behavior, training techniques, and the incredible bond between humans and their canine companions.

The CATCH Master Class Experience

The CATCH Master Class program provided me with an extensive education in dog training and behavior. Spanning ten comprehensive phases, the program combined self-study, hands-on training, and mentor-guided learning. Each phase focused on a unique aspect of training, requiring me to:

• Study from a specialized guide and highly recommended training books
• Work with a mentor trainer for direct feedback and guidance
• Complete hands-on training exercises with my student dog
• Take both written and multiple-choice exams to reinforce learning
• Perform graded demonstrations of training techniques for evaluation

This structured approach allowed me to develop both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for professional dog training.

Hands-On Workshops at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center

In addition to the coursework, I had the incredible opportunity to attend two week-long, in-person workshops at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey:

1. Professional Dog Training Skills Workshop (March 2016)

   • Focused on refining training techniques and handling skills.
   • Provided real-world experience working with dogs in need.

2. Body Language, Behavior, and Problem-Solving Skills Workshop (April 2017)

   • Emphasized canine communication and behavior modification.
   • Taught essential skills for understanding and addressing behavioral challenges.

These workshops were immensely valuable in applying the concepts learned in the Master Class. Not only did they enhance my practical skills, but they also allowed me to make a positive impact on shelter dogs, improving their chances of adoption.

Becoming a CATCH Certified Dog Trainer has been one of the most fulfilling achievements of my career. The knowledge and experience gained through this program have empowered me to help dogs and their owners build stronger, healthier relationships. From basic obedience to behavior modification, every training session brings a new opportunity to enhance communication and mutual understanding between humans and their furry companions.
